THE RETAIL BEHEMOTH |

Tesco was started in 1919 in London. Over the next two decades, it set up 100 stores. Tesco was credited with being the precursor to modern retail in the UK, having introduced different store formats, distribution systems, private label products, etc. It was the first retailer to bring in changes in response to demands from customers. Tesco introduced the Club card, a loyalty card, which made it highly popular among shoppers. By 2006, it had become the largest retailer in the UK with a market share of 29%.
Tesco started its global ventures in 1979 with its entry into Ireland. However, unable to sustain the operations, it exited the country in 1986. Its second international venture – in France – in the early 1990s was also unsuccessful .
